http://www.imagemagick.org/ works great for certain tasks. It's easy to
create shell scripts to do all sorts of things. There are many scripts for
file managers such as Nautilus http://g-scripts.sourceforge.net/ so you can
have a GUI interface. They don't work on some versions of Nautilus though.
Image Magick is GIMP but it can be very handy for batch processing.
