Re: get slackware

i run #slackware on undernet so i keep up on apt-like apps for slackware to answer the inevitable questions. i haven't used slack-get as of yet, but i can attest to the rest at least functioning as advertised. i would also never recommend setting them up to use non-standard packages (i.e. linuxpackages.net or your buddy's "built-my-own" package repository). swaret has a dubious history of malicious community involvement by it's original author so a lot of people won't use it, but it, and slapt-get, work fine for upgrading packages from any official slackware mirror. all i can say is that if something broke on a system after using them they must not have been configured properly or an entire distro upgrade was attempted which can sometimes lead to problems.

for anyone else using slack, rather than using an apt-knockoff, i recommend pkgtool2. it's not a replacement for the original pkgtool and can co-exist on the same system without issue. what i love about it is that it monitors source installs and generates the same /var/log/packages entries for source installs as pkgtool generates for normal packages. that means at any time you can upgrade, uninstall, modify the saved configure and compile setting and recompile provided you have the source on hand and can also generate slack-packs from any source install you've had pkgtool2 monitor. this comes in handy for some friends of mine that often have trouble compile apps, they can just use mine if all else fails.
