you could always have your script determine your current desktop image, run xscreensaver as your wallpaper (with -root) and put your original desktop image back when you're done. i don't have xscreensaver installed so i don't know if you can put a time limit on it. but you could, say, have the script run it, wait for 30-45 seconds just long enough for you to write your captions then swap back to your original desktop image. then again, i think it might not even replace your desktop image completely, but rather just display on top of it. worth a shot...
