[Fwd: more linux learning]

Writer visited Anchorage and had nothing but Linux boxes for email - all
week long!

Writer was given a PCLinux disk to take back home.
His modem is a Conexant HCF V90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem, so I suggested
trying the 2.6 kernel in Knoppix. Doesn't look promising.
Subsequently he tested Knoppix at work.

Anyone have any suggestions about the video card?
Writer isn't on AKLUG (yet :-) but I will make sure any help gets to
him.

Hello,

I downloaded Knoppix 3.4 and made a CD yesterday. It defaults to the 2.4
kernel but has an option to use 2.6. Download speed from Purdue was 8 to
8.5 KB/s; after an hour or two I tried a few other sites and enjoyed
downloading from the Netherlands at almost 150 KB/s!

Neither Knoppix (with various boot options) nor PCLinux was able to figure
out my display adapter at work. It's a DIAMOND Fire GL2 Video Accelerator
that came with this Dell three years ago. (The machine also has a SCSI
hard drive, 512 KB RAM, and a 1.7 GHz Xeon.)

My modem at home is probably a lost cause, too. Knoppix does have some
support for dialing a regular modem from the graphical desktop, and maybe I
can figure out from that how to make PCLinux use a modem, too.

I guess buying a Linux box isn't as easy as finding just any old machine.
If I want to dial out, I'll need a separate modem. And if I want a
graphical desktop, I'll need a supported video card. But maybe I could
find some drivers on the Web that didn't come with Knoppix or PCLinux.

Joel
