scsi tape and loader commands

I am trying to use the "mt" command to exercise a scsi loader attached to RH9
 workstation.
 
I am pretty sure I have identified the correct device. But I get an "operation
not permitted" error when I try to get the status.

mt -f /dev/sgd status
/dev/sgd: Operation not permitted

/dev/sgd is owned by root with rwx set.

Are there some other scsi commands for loaders and robots?
