Re: Switching to Open Office

About a million years ago I was using Word for Windows (there was no
version then). There was a nifty address book built into the letter
format, which I found to be very handy, and happily loaded it up with
several hundred addresses. Microsoft came out with a new improved
version, which I purchased. It broke the letter format template. Call to
Tech Support showed that they knew they broke it, they did not care,
they had no intention of fixing it, and there was no way to recover the
addresses.

At that time, I was programing for a living, and our existence depended
on forward compatibility of our products. I could not and cannot to this
day comprehend this attitude, which I understand is still very much part
of Microsoft. However, I avoid their broken products, and strongly
recommend doing so to everyone I work with.

I would suggest that Open Office is more compatable with Microsoft
office stuff that either the previous or next releases from Microsoft
will be.
