Recycling a Laptop

Has anyone (successfully) removed and re-used a laptop display? I have a
very old laptop with a perfectly good display and have several good uses
for such a display. Are there kits to convert the wires to a standard
SVGA plug? Are there power issues to address? Help is appreciated.
