I run Debian unstable for my desktops/workstations and I don't
think the Debian version really matters.
Just the kernel I believe. (could be wrong)

Right now I have VMWare 3.2 workstation on my A31 Thinkpad and run
several versions of Linux for practice including some
Windows os's and a FreeBSD as well.

This is my latest kernel:
andy@trout:~$ uname -a
Linux trout 2.4.22.011204 #1 Mon Jan 12 15:05:28 EST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

If you use a stock debian kernel, you need to:
apt-get install kernel-headers-2.4.xx
to get vmware to install properly.
