Did you chmod o+t on the var directory?
This is what my var looks like:
coho:~# ls -al /usr/local/dc/zope/
drwxrwxr-t 2 root users 4096 Nov 12 20:56 var
I created a user on my system called zope and start the server like this
/usr/local/dc/zope/start -u zope
Andy

Let me know if there any problems if you look at the site
