Tim -
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Gentoo -- in fact, i've
just finished my first install sunday, and am installing on an
athlon box today (i love screen and ssh!)
You might try selecting a new mirror and re-emerge
# cp /etc/make.conf /etc/make.conf.bak
# mirrorselect -a -s4 -o >> /etc/make.conf
# emerge clean mplayer
# emerge mplayer-0.92

-- File: smime.p7s
