Are you located in Anchorage? Have a machine built for you so you get
exactly what you want. If you are in Anchorage call CustomCPU 277-9696,
they can build you exactly what you want for a very inexpensive setup.

The sound problem is easily taken care of if you purchase any Creative Labs
product such as "Sound Blaster" or "Live".
I am unable to assist with the DVD issue - I use a USB on my laptop with no
Linux problems. I have a new DVD writer in my desk top but have not
attempted Linux with it yet.
The $1000.00 price cap is reasonable and your new system should come very
close.

OK...it is dividend time and mine is burning a hole in my pocket!
I am looking to buy a Linux based PC. Here are the requirements:
- Should have drivers for sound card. I want to be able to record some
audio tapes that we made for the kids onto CD. This is critical!
- That means it needs to have a CD-RW (Although I do have a USB CD-RW)
- We want to be able to view DVD's on it (is that still possible?) this
is optional if it is not possible to view DVD's on it.
- It definitely will have a 17" Flat Panel
- (wife requirement) It MUST be black (or black and silver) kinda like
the Dell machines. I suppose we could consider one of those plexiglass
cases with the cool lighting...this is for the wife.....really!
- Obviously it has to cost around $1000.
