Verisign and Thawte have some good documentation on securing your website. Most browsers show a paddlock symbol if your site is using SSL if that's what you mean and you can also view the certificate from the browser. Security is a relative thing of course. One one end of the scale US Top Secret facilities don't allow internet connections last I heard. For all practical purposes 128 bit SSL is adequate for the next few years. Most fraud uses social engineering.
