Yes there are but I think ping & tracetoute ues the same packet type. In
any event, automatic scripts (like redhat's startup) tend to shotgun stuff.
If I can't ping and I can't traceroute, the first thing I check is that the
ipchains/tables list is empty.

Is that necessarily true? Aren't there more than one kind of
ICMP packet?
