Boy, I sure remember my lust in my younger days a grid-dip meter
and my very own portable RCA tube tester.

Man I feel old right now.

For a "ham" (KL7FHX) this is a real chuckle :)

Back in the good-ole-daiz, Heath, the now defunct originator of
"HeathKit", sold a "cantenna". It was a gallon paint can painted
black with the expected "Heath Canenna" on the side. The rest of
the kit was the lid with some holes drilled in just the right
places, an aluminum minichassis, a 50 ohm, non-inductive, power
resistance, a couple of metal straps with hardware, a coaxial
chassis mount connector with an appropriate assortment of wire,
nuts, screws, washers, etc.

After assembly, the cantenna was rated at about 50 watts dry and 500
watts with suitable transformer oil submerging the resistance. This
was a dummy load for tuning up transmitters. I think it was good up
to at least 60 MHz, and I think I used it anyhow on two meters,
which is 144 to 148 MHz.

I had it for about 20 years, and for some reason got rid of it. It
was a bit bulky. I still have a linear amplifier capable of putting
out in the neighborhood of 500 watts (RF to the antenna feed line),
but I have not used it in over 20 years. One of these days ...
