A reply to myself ;) Some stats on usage.
 I image a 3.12gb root partition. There are three options with Partition
Image, no compression, gzip or bunzip(max). The gzip option creates a
800 mb image in 20 minutes. This is with 'checking' enabled. It takes
4.5 miutes to restore. There is a list.archive available for qa.

Here is a short description:

 - kernel-2.4.19 with jfs,xfs,befs,reiserfs, ext2fs/ext3fs, fat16,
        fat32, ntfs, ntfsrw, hpfs,
             hfs, ufs (bsd FFS, Solaris FS and many other options
      - vim / emacs-clone (zile) editors
      - midnight commander: mc
      - devfs ...
     - jfsutils, reiserfsutils, xfsutils, e2fsprogs, dosfstools
      - gpart, parted, fdisk, sfdisk
      - LVM tools
      - cdrecord
      - framebuffer
