After some more testing....

When I type the variables to be string like Leif suggested it works only
when there are characters in the value, however, if there are numbers in the
value it doesn't work....and vice versa, if I type them with int, then it
works fine with the numbers but screws up if there are letters (actually I
would expect this when typing them to int).

So it is definitely a typing issue, but I am unclear on how to resolve it.
