I tried opening the .doc file, a 4 page Job Description I downloaded off
the net a while back again.

Changed 4 periods to ?s.

Saved the file under a different name, still as a .doc. OpenOffice
warned me about saving as a 97/2000/xp file.

Closed OpenOffice along with the document.

Started OpenOffice again, opened my newly-saved document, printed it. It
kept it's ?s.

I'm using the rpms of OpenOffice supplied by ximian
(openoffice-1.0-0.ximian.1, openoffice-skel-1.0-0.ximian.1), maybe that
makes a difference. It shouldn't I know.
