You have to call a command to set the background, usually from your style
configuration file. For example, in the gnoid style there's a command at
the bottom:
rootCommand: bsetroot -solid black
If you want to use an image, simply invoke the appropriate command. For
example, in my (obligatory) Matrix theme I have:
rootCommand: xsetbg -border black -fullscreen ~/.blackbox/images/matrix-mygreenlines.jpg
There are further examples of this from the blackbox styles you can download
off of themes.org.
