Oh, I don't know. I think it is easier if you pair it with Mastering
Regular Expressions (also an O'Reilly book). You can't really use Sed & Awk
without knowing something about regular expressions. The two books together
are quite good. You can start to read them 'in parallel' as the first
chapters in Sed & Awk use basic expressions you learn in the first chapters
of Mastering Regular Expressions.
