They just had a spot on national news about this. The scam has been going on
for so long that the US has sent security folks to Nigeria to help stop the
crime.

I work at a bank and have seen this scam in action (as noted earlier this is
just a rip off of the Nigerian scam)......
The way it usually works is that they send you what are usually counterfeit
cashier's checks or checks from big corporations (GM, GE, Sony, etc) and ask
you to immediately wire them the funds once you deposit the check(s). You
send the wire, but then a few days later the checks you deposited all get
returned from the drawer bank as counterfeit. You end up taking the loss,
which can usually be pretty significant.
If anyone has any questions, I would be more than happy to give you the
contact info for our Security/Investigations guy at work....
