Subject: Suse 8.0 and Samba startup?

The Samba documentation says that the calls to startup smbd and nmbd should be put into
"etc/rc.local" or "etc/rc.d/rc.local".
But there isn't a "etc/rc.local" on my machine (Suse 8.0) and neither is there a
"etc/rc.d/rc.local". There is a file called "etc/init.d/rc". Is that where I'm supposed to put it?
Is there some place where I can find out what all the scripts in /etc are for, or are they rather
standard for Linux systems? It seems Suse has differences from standard Linux, at least according
to the big fat general Linux book I have.
The documentation also refers to two different "styles" of unix:
a) BSD Unix
b) System V Unix
Which type does Linux belong to?
- Cisco
