I have a newbie question...
Linux Admin for Dummies isn't helping!

I have an atapi cdrom/cdr/cdrw drive installed using SUSE 8.0 with KDE3
I can use XCDRoast to write cds(cdrecorder) but when I try to mount or r=
ead
 a disc(audio or data)(cdrom) I get the following message from a gui laun=
ch
 .................................................................
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was
specified
=2E..................................................................

When I try to mount from a terminal I get the following

 ...................................................................
patp@linux:~> mount /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
patp@linux:~> exit
=2E.....................................................................

also
=2E......................................................................=
=2E.....
=2E............... linux:/etc # mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
=2E......................................................................=
=2E.....
=2E................

Following is the content of my /etc/fstab file ............
=2E......................................................................=
=2E.....
=2E............ /dev/hda3 / reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0
/dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap pri=3D42 0 0
=2E......................................................................=
=2E.....
=2E.................

could it be a reiserfs problem?
Any ideas or pointers to a fix?
TIA ..
