An update on recording dvd's in Gnu/Linux. Joerg Shilling is the author
of cdrecord which is the (only free)backend everyone uses to burn cdr's.
He is also the author of cdrecord-prodvd which behaves exactly like the
familiar cdrecord but for dvd's. The only difference is while cdrecord
is gpl the dvd version is not, it is free for non-commercial use, there
is a key that is available on his web site. The file system used is
iso9660 and you must have large file system support,its a ~4.7gb file. I
am not sure how current the kernel has to be for the large file system
support. There are commercial versions of software available to burn
dvd's in Linux, they generally run in the hundreds of dollars while
there Windows counterparts sell for less than $100 :( or are given away
free with the recorder. Hope this is helpful, it is long.
I did this on a Debian testing system using the 2.4.18 kernel.The
recorder is a Pioneer A04.
