Hmmm... KDE and Gnome each have their own daemons that they run to
traffic-cop sound output. This might be what you're thinking of... the
Loki games should blithly ignore all of that and try to latch on to the
device files...

Quick thought, what soundcard do you have? most drivers only allow one
process to open the device at a time. the SB Live! is the only exception
that I know of.. I've been running a Live! for so long I tend to forget
those type of problems.. If you aren't using a Live! card you may need to
make sure Gnome has it's sound daemon disabled...

you might also see what has latched itself onto the sound device.. run:
"lsof | grep /dev/dsp" the first column is what you're interested in.

I don't have a copy of either KDE or Gnome in front of me right now so if
