Subject: what's the linux equivalent of scandisk?

Just wondering. I'm wanting to do a HD scan to check for bad sectors and
surface damage. Is there a Linux equivalent to the Windows scandisk
program?
Linkage? HOWTO? Anything would be appreciated.
