I'm convinced the best command to run on XP is fdisk.

How much RAM do you have? XP is brutal with its RAM requirements, and so
you may be hearing paging in action, especially if it's set to go into
Hibernation after a while. Go into the Performance tool (I think you can
get there by right-clicking My Computer, then select Manage, then choose
Performance from there, but I might just have too much 2000 on my brain) and
run some counters to see what services are active then. As a shortcut you
can try Task Manager's Processes tab; watch it for a bit.

My son's computer has Windows XP - im wondering if Anybody out there knows
WHY windows XP has so much Hard Drive activity when it idles! leave it
sitting for about 10 minutes, and it sounds like its defragging! (its not,
bytheway) This kinda ticks me off cause not only is it noisy, but its
wearing out the hard drive even faster.

Any Ideas?

maybe its time to teach my son Linux :)
