PCMCIA V.S. CardBus

The original PCMCIA is a 16 bit bus running as a logical extension of
the ISA bus. (note, logical extension via bridging controller)

Cardbus is a 16/32bit superset of PCMCIA.

A Cardbus bridging controller is connected to both the ISA and PCI
busses. A Cardbus slot will accept Both 16bit PCMCIA and 32bit
CardBus cards, but a PCMCIA slot will only accept 16 bit PCMCIA
devices.

So, 16bit devices are still around because many older or lower end
laptops cannot accept CardBus cards. For a modem it does not really
matter, CardBus was introduced mainly to support things like 100Mbit
ethernet, SCSI interfaces, etc...
