I guess I should have included the fact that it is using LPRng. If I can
figure out how to make the ghostscript program use the default font...I
think that would be enough to solve my problem.

I think we need still a bit more info.

It sounds like you are doing something like

lpr .cshrc

and want it use courier10

What are you using for spooling? Standard lpd? lpr-ng? CUPS?

Personally, I prefer to use a2ps (ascii to ps) or one of
nenscript/genscript/enscript. These all have font (and two
pages/page) options.

so in your case,

enscript -f Courier10 .cshrc | lpr

Is this what you are after?

You can use magicfilters (or several other methods) to setup
"intelligent" spooling that will recognize ascii and pipe it through
enscript while properly passing ps..
