Do you have contact to the outside world from the Smoothwall box?
Try logging onto the Smoothwall box and pinging the outside world.
If this doesn't work, well you know more about the problem.
If it does work:
Can you ping or telnet or ftp from a box inside your internal
(or green) network to the outside world? If you can not then
you probably don't have the packet filter rules right.
If you can and still can't surf out, the problem may be
related to SmoothWall's http proxy. Try turning it off.
(As I recall, you can do that on Smoothwall. I haven't used it
in quite awhile as I have gone to our own firewall. Well, it
is just a version of Astaro Security Linux.)
Also, during the setup phrase try doing everything using ip
numbers. That way you won't get screwed up by a DNS
misconfiguration.
