Subject: KDE taskbar disappears?

Well, got around to trying KDE installed off of the Redhat 7.2 CDs. Worked
fine for a while, and looked promising.
But.............
startx'ed this afternoon (I'm still a command line kinda guy) and:
got the startup screen.
got the startup sounds
taskbar displayed along the bottom.
startup hint displayed
taskbar along the bottom disappeared (startup hint still there)
I clicked close on the startup hint
still no taskbar.
If I startx as root, there's a taskbar.
If I reboot and log in as me, then startx, no taskbar.
Searching the web shows this is a common problem, but only suggestion was to
recompile KDE from source.
Any suggestions?
