My guess is possibly something with the power saving settings in your
bios. I was getting something similar on my server which was running
RedHat where every couple days my whole server would stop responding, so
I had to go to my server (which is also in my closet - hehe) and login
and restart all my network stuff.

I simultaneously switched it over to SuSE 7.3 and turned off all the
power saving features, paying special attention to the options allowing
the computer to mess around with ISA/PCI cards (i.e. my nic card) to
save power. Since then it's been running 36 days straight with no
problem at all. Although I can not be sure whether it was the switch to
SuSE or the fiddling with the BIOS setting which fixed it all, but I
have a feeling the BIOS settings were the key.
