Yes, this is going out to the list, but this is primarily directed to
civileme, since he is our resident Mandrake expert.

Versions: 8.0 & 8.1
Identical problems with both.

System: Micron NetFrame Dual PIII-500
512MB of RAM
DAC960 RAID controller
Two 3Com 905B NIC's
One built in Intel Ethernet Pro 100
IDE CD-ROM drive

OS: Currently Mandrake 7.0 with a 2.4.12 kernel. And everything is running
juuuuust fine. :)

Procedure: Booted off of CD. Hardware detect finds Symbios SCSI controller.
Let's me select the language, accept the license, and select the type of
install.

It then goes into the HD/SCSI card detection and hangs.

Investigation on the other screens reveals a rather strange situation. The
kernel messages show (IIRC) the first two lines of the DAC960 driver
messages. The "log" shows that insmod was invoked for the DAC960 module.
But insmod never returns. On the BusyBox shell screen, a ps shows that
insmod is running and using 0.0 CPU. Trying to kill insmod doesn't work.
Neither kill or kill -9 will faze it.

So there it sits. Hung. Unable to proceed. Holding up my server upgrade. And
wasting four hours of my morning. :)

Typing "expert" at the boot prompt doesn't avoid the above mess. I didn't
try "noauto," however.

Any ideas? Any workarounds?

BTW, if you need more info, just ask. I can give you the output of anything
you want. Except, maybe, `cat /etc/shadow`. :)

Thanks.
