Try XFCE,
http://www.xfce.org
or one of the other low-resource window managers. icewm, blackbox, etc.
They are very easy to configure, and much quicker....
You can run KDE and Gnome apps under them as well if needed..
One of my test workstations is an old P120 with 48mgs ram
2mg video and XFCE flies on it !!!
