[aklug] Free Software OS on iPad?

Hi list, somebody gave us an old iPad (model A1219) and we want to
install a free software OS on it. Is this feasible? There was a lot of
opinions I found in Web forum posts saying that this was in theory
possible but in reality would be very difficult. But most of these posts
were rather old and from people who didn't seem to have any concrete
knowledge on the subject. Is there perhaps now some practical way to
install Android or Gnu/Linux?
