Hey, AKLUGers.... I'll skip the backstory, but basically I have this
situation where I need to pick for someone a /new/ laptop that is fully
free-software compatible, but available at a /reasonable/ price. FSF
recommends thinkpenguin:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/notebook-computers-gnu-linux-2

However, the cheapest one they offer is $699.00 (before any add-ons or
options). This is hard to justify when the absolute fanciest laptop
you can get locally at Fairbanks Walmart is only $550 (touchscreen +
awesome processor + 8 GB RAM + 1TB hard drive).

To me, "free-software compatible" would mean not requiring any
proprietary drivers or binary blobs. The thinkpenguin laptops are
supposed to be fully compatible (except proprietary BIOS, I think).
Does anybody on the list have another suggestion? I think I could
convince them to go as high as $500.
