Worst comes to worst, I've got a mini-pcie wifi card that I can
let you have.

it's only 2.5gHz compatible, so no 802.11ac speeds,
but it should be fine.

I've done some more research and have found issues pretty much identical with mine - but since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, I've got other duties ...
I appreciate the input I've received. I suspect that the solution
- once found - is simpler than updating kernels, but I am open to
  that.
