I think there is a pretty big gulf between the Linksys like firmware and
the bare metal router distro like pfsense. But the gulf between Cisco
juniper and pfsense is much smaller.

I wouldn't call any of them junk, even the tomato or ddwrt. And I know of a
couple really big organizations that use Alpine, and they have a couple
hundred servers and have about 300 developers across the country and they
are not feeling like they are missing anything. Plus they are really big
targets because of the type of industry they are in.

The nice thing is that you can just keep on testing and trying, and making
that hardware stretch. It has the potential to be fun.
