  Good info Mike, thanks! I will research this further, time
  permitting.

  FYI : am using tar --version
  bsdtar 2.8.3 - libarchive 2.8.3 on Mac OSX 10.7

  and you have now seen that I have submitted a query to

  Like you I am concerned about how drush may be reordering the tar
  options. The fact that the `verbose' option to drush causes it to
  print out the commands as it were does not necessarily mean that
  is the order in which drush is actually executing them ...
