I have used Linux on laptops for many years. Currently I have two
older netbooks both running xubuntu 12.04. I have never had any
problems with resolution. I use the 'stock' xubuntu desktop on
both - that is xfce. It is a good compromise between usability and
modest consumption of resources.
BTW: My main workstation has been for the last two years a 2011
mac mini with 8 gigs of RAM. I have virtualbox installed, but have
not used it thus far. I have very *nix-like environment. Bash,
mutt, mysql, fetchmail, procmail, postfix, vim, macVim (gui
version of vim for mac) mc and many other tools installed with
macports. My command terminal is iTerm2 which is like
gnome-terminal, et al. And I've got Open Office.
If one chooses to run console applications from the X11 terminal,
the response is much faster than under iTerm2 - it's almost like
having a twice faster machine - but the resolution is pretty
crappy.
We have two linux base desktops here - my wife uses a Compaq with
Ubuntu 11.04 and I've got another older - but no less functional
Gateway running ubuntu 12.04.
Frankly, if I get another machine soon, it would be the newer mac
mini which supports 16 GB Ram. I would then probably be using
virtualbox with some kind of linux.
Mac is wonderfully engineered. Incredibly solid performance, but a
resource hog. And IMHO, apple is as much a self-serving monolith
as Windows, MsNBC, News Corps and the Hudson Bay Trading company.
But no one is perfect ...
