I agree. All seems to be possible to be read by someone. Every carrier out
there is subject to getting one of those 'National Security' letters and
will have to comply. Whether it's Google, Yahoo, ACS, or GCI. Even me, if I
set up my own server.

Every mail system out there is scanning email. Even if it's purportedly
only for the purpose of catching spam. If they can scan for spam, they can
scan for other things. What's to stop them from scanning for those other
things?

As near as I can tell, Google is one of the few challenging National
Security letters.

Google is the only one I've seen putting any real effort into encrypting
searches, with the exception of ad clicks (they have a right to make
revenue somewhere).

There are also options, not free, for encrypting Gmail & Drive.

I do have a problem trusting corporations, but I can't wear ALL the hats. I
have to make a decision at some point to trust someone...
