In order to identify the solution, one must be able to identify the
problem-I kept telling myself that when I was trying to use the right
keywords to google search last night...

I stumbled upon an oldie but a goodie however: Hirens
Bootcd<http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd>I kept that in my toolbox
when I was strictly Windows (and even before I
knew the difference between a partition and the filesystem-I was way more
naive back than.) I do not remember any tools to repair bios or mbr...but
they look promising. Nice collection of diagnostic and repair tools!

Not what I had in mind however. And I'll admit I am not altogether
convinced that a suite that adds another layer of hand holding is the end
all, there is wisdom in keeping it simple and minimal. And even more wisdom
in educating users instead of dumbing down.

This maybe a worthy dragon to slay, if nothing else to rtfm ncurses. :)

Thanks for the gentoo tip, I'll look in there tonight.
