Hey guys, I've got a RAID 1 array in my PC (mdadm) which has been
running for a few years. It is a single array mirrored across two
500GB drives - whole disk, no fancy partitioning.

A few days ago a drive failed, so I bought a 1TB drive (the smallest I
could get directly from Western Digital) and replaced the failed
drive. But when I used "mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sda" I got
a FailSpare event. Here's the e-mail I got from mdadm:

quote:
- --------
This is an automatically generated mail message from mdadm
running on enigma

A FailSpare event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.

It could be related to component device /dev/sda.

Faithfully yours, etc.

P.S. The /proc/mdstat file currently contains the following:

Personalities : [linear] [raid0] [raid1] [raid10] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md0 : active raid1 sda[2](F) sdb[1]
      488386496 blocks [2/1] [_U]

unused devices: <none>
- --------

Do I need to partition the new (larger) drive or something first?

Here is info on the drives:
