I don't use Ubuntu desktop myself, but I think it uses Gnome 3, which
by default has desktop icons turned off. (The fundamental idea behind
Gnome 3 is to help you get more done by removing all the useful
options and features that might distract or confuse you.) But there

As far as the disk file structure, we can certainly tell you lots
about that, though it would help if you would tell us specifically
