R-Studio is an excellent windows based tool which I have had great success with over the years. If they have their original system disks you should be able to restore the OS without losing any data.

A good friend accidentally erased some files from a NTFS partition on her Windows Vista laptop and has asked for my help recovering the files. She's stopped using the laptop so potentially the deleted files have yet to be written over. Can anyone recommend a good recovery tool/live CD to attempt recovery?
