Various options and combinations of the following have worked for me over the past several years.
k9copy,dvd95,Handbrake,WinFF,and as you mentioned VLC generally works 98% of the time. Do you have all codecs installed? I had one issue with VLC where it would only reach the half-way point then call it quits but never the issue you mentioned.
As for the movie in question, I too have a legal dvd of the same and was able to make an archival
backup a couple of years ago, using some combo of the above mentioned programs, unfortunately I don't remember which? :o(
On occasion using CLI seems to work as well when the GUI's fail.
(However misplaced my notes on that as well)
