From what I gather, the Android system.. let's say, collides with
Microsoft's patent portfolio in various places. So, Microsoft forces
the handset manufacturers to give them money or be sued for patent
infringment, and the manufacturers cut a deal.

It all seems pretty shady, but that's apparently what patents are for
now (presuming they were ever used for anything else).
