OK, I take back what I said about joe. :-) joe is pretty cool and very
portable. Chris Brown will have to speak more to that. :-)

Rectangular block selection, tabbed windows, multiline regular
expressions -- all killer features. And gedit supports remote file
editing with FTP or SSH? I had no idea!

I also forgot to mention that you can use .inputrc to set your editing
mode for many other programs to use vi or emacs key bindings, further
leveraging the "universality" argument. :-)
