[aklug] Re: console applications resource

My understanding is he was watching an avi or xvid encoded dvd-rip and not
the DVD directly. I haven't even tackled mencoder...yet.

A little bit of my background-my first computer was a Commodore 128. I
didn't realize at the time how small a 2 mhz processor or 128 kb ram was,
It did run games and a word processor (and ran them well.) Years later my
first internet connection was a 56 kb/s line-websites were so simple. 25+
years later I now realize that programmers had to move individual bits
around from a 4 kb executable. Just amazing!

How does that relate to this thread? Well I have been fascinated with
these so called lightweight distros since I first heard of Puppy and
DSL-especially when they just worked, compared to Suse and Fedora back
then (and before I discovered noapic acpi=off...there are many computer
monitors with my forehead imprinted on them before that discovery.) They
overcame those hardware restrictions and created something very useful.
And attractive if you have a finely developed aversion to bloat. They
worked on older computers and just scream on newer computers. I agree
with item #3 on the blog: Don't drag my system. I have yet to find a
console app that is resource intensive.

In this day and age of 8gb memory and network connections measured in Gb/s
I find it ironic that "modern" hardware is powered by the likes of Atom or
ARM to get our work done.

Btw this reply is my very first written from Alpine with IMAP to my Gmail
account (do not forget "[Advanced User Preferences] Save will Not Delete"
and "[Pruning Rule] don't rename, don't delete."

Yes the learning curve is higher but this sucker is FAST!
