I like books too. I got the following to bring myself up to speed
on PHP, a selected framework and a CMS:
  1)PHP: The good parts
  2)Professional CodeIgnitor (framework)
  3)Using Drupal (CMS)
And I have bookmarked the w3schools tutorial.

My choice of books was based on the fact that I have been a web
developer for 14 years, and am familiar with OOP platforms. Your
  choices might be different.

  cheers
