Heh... admittedly the documentation for advanced functionality less than stellar. But VLC makes an impressive amount of codec and protocol functionality available at compile time. (I couldn't have got my last student project done without VLC's Video 4 Linux support.) Furthermore, VLC takes advantage of the SSE and MMX processing extensions.
